Ireland or the Irish Republic, covers most of the smaller of the British Isles. Ireland is predominantly Irish and English speaking. For centuries Irish politics have been bloody, complex and emotive because of British involvement, and thus Protestant - Catholic tensions. The partitioning of the island in 1921 still deeply affects the political life of both parts.
A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for the 26 southern counties; the six northern counties (Ulster) remained part of Great Britain. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, approved in 1998, has not yet been implemented.
YWAM in IRELAND:
In 1983, Wade Robertson pioneered the first YWAM work in Ireland. Rob Clarke later took over the leadership and for 12 years DTS's and other ministries were based in a cloister facility in Dublin. Presently YWAM has no facilities, although ministries continue in areas such as Kings Kids, and Kerygma Teams (mobilizing and training in the Catholic world). Recently Derek and Trich Dodd have launched a Family Life Resources Ministry in the south east. Another recent ministry launched is the Aisling Project, providing homework assistance, recreation, computer skills, fun and fellowship and a daily meal as a means of pre-evangelism to at risk teenagers.
