Hungary was part of the polyglot Austro-Hungarian Empire, which collapsed in World War I. It fell under communist rule following World War II. A revolt in 1956 and an announced withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact was met with massive military intervention by Moscow. In the more open GORBACHEV years, Hungary led the movement to dissolve the Warsaw Pact and steadily shifted toward multiparty democracy and a market-oriented economy. Following the collapse of the USSR in 1991, Hungary developed close political and economic ties to Western Europe. It joined NATO in 1999 and is a frontrunner in a future expansion of the EU. With the breakdown of Communism came freedom of religion in 1990. Christians account for 86% of the population with the majority Roman Catholic.
YWAM in HUNGARY:
Presently there is one YWAM base, located in Budapest with 25 staff. A recent downtown location was purchased for a coffee bar ministry and
offices. Ministry areas include Youth ministry; concerts and evangelism with a band [5:20], coffee bar Rezkigyo (the Bronze Serpent), DTS's, Summer of Service, Rock For Life Christian Music festival focussing on training, reconciliation, and evangelism and helping with church planting in Romania, Yugoslavia, Bosnia, and Turkey. God seems to be sending future leaders of this region for training and discipling, and to be released into ministry.
prayer needs:
-that God continues sending future leaders for training
-for open doors into the lives of Hungarian and Balkan youth
-for a multiplication of YWAM into Hungary, and Hungarian leadership to emerge.
