On Day Two of their annual meeting, YWAM's Global Leadership Team wrestled with the question of how to relate to ministries, businesses or organizations started by YWAMers and applying the mission's values but not directly under its authority.
For example a Business Discipleship Training School, operated as a night course, is reaching 1,000 business people a year in Korea. Other "out of the box" YWAM expressions are operating in the spheres of education, arts and government. YWAM Founder Loren Cunningham complimented the work in Korea and other fields, and said they offer opportunities to expand Christian influence in the spheres. "We need to be clear that these people are YWAMers, but not YWAM staff. To be on staff one must have completed a full DTS be under the covering of an existing YWAM ministry."
Various GLT members stressed the importance of the mission's live-learn model of training, which is often absent from abbreviated forms of training modeled after YWAM. University of the Nations (U of N) International Provost Tom Bloomer said: "We're not backing down from the live-learn aspect of DTS ... Something incredibly powerful happens when we, like the disciples, leave our nets to follow Jesus." Associate U of N Provost David Hamilton agreed, saying "we must be inflexible in changing the values of DTS but flexible on its structures." Members were challenged by International Chairman Lynn Green to pray over this issue in the Prayer and Strategy Meetings that begin Sunday at the U of N Kona campus.
On Saturday, members received a positive outside evaluation of the GLT's progress on openness in its proceedings and effectiveness in engaging wider groups in forming its strategic priorities. Members affirmed the continuance of the Team Three leadership structure, as well as an Obligations and Operations Group to handle corporate business through the year. They decided to meet next year from August 31-September 4, just prior to the U of N International Workshops.
In Saturday's meetings, national and regional directors were encouraged to copyright or legally affirm the Youth With A Mission name and all associated ministry names, logos or mottoes within their jurisdictions. Jim Stier, Field Director for the Americas, issued a strong word to members, reminding them to advise leaders of YWAM's open door policy toward teams and ministries coming into their regions. He said some who had obstructed outside initiatives in the past had been removed. He also reminded us that teams have a duty and responsibility to make contact and work with YWAM ministries that already live in the area they go to. Tom Bloomer recalled the story of Caleb who left one walled city for his daughter to possess. "In every area where we are working there are always other 'walled cities' to be taken. We need to direct new teams to those."
